@Tim: Mumble's come in leaps and bounds, particularly since 1.2 came out... there are of course a few bugs here and there, but things are being sorted out and the chief issue with fixing bugs has been getting good quality bug reporting.

Most people are just content to go "bah, it doesn't work!" and stop there... that's absolutely useless in Open Source.

In the interests of the article itself, Mumble 1.2 is now capable of using CELT, which halves the audio buffer size to 10ms, resulting in even faster communications. It also sounds about 400x better on the default settings. I compare Mumble 1.2 to Ventrilo and wonder how the heck we put up with it for so long. :)

In the few days or week, a new version of Mumble will be release, with many features like the possibility to administer entirely the users from the client, better quality with less bandwidth, and many new others...

Take a look at http://mumble.sourceforge.net/Upcoming to see all changes

Hey why don't you try "TeamTalk"? I think it's way better than Teamspeak, Skype and even Ventrilo (I wasn't able to configure Mumble ¬¬). It's the program with the least latency...

Matt, if you have a machine (or a virtual machine) available, install Ubuntu Server 8.04 (hardy) on it, which is just the newest server version. Then simply do a sudo aptitude install mumble-server. Read the Mumble manual, forward the appropriate port and you're good to go!

Alternatively, you can just install Mumble for Windows, it comes with the server.

Sir, that was a brilliant writeup. I am interested in hosting Mumble servers. How do I go about doing this? I downloaded it...now what ;). I bookmarked this page but also feel free to e-mail me. Looks like a better alternative to Ventrilo's costly licenses.
